Review of Hills Like White Elephants

A couple in a bar. A somber and unsteady setting. And an elephant in the room with them.

In his short story, Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway truly flaunts his mastery of the delicate writing style of minimalism. The short story unfolds between the exceptional lines of dialogue, and the story’s elusive, subtle way of providing hints of the actual themes of the story leaves the appreciative readers thirsty for more.

Though confusing at first glance, Hemingway skillfully bares the conflicts of difficult and tabooed conversations with this short story. Driven by dialogue, in which the characters say plenty without really saying much at all, the writing style of the short story truly reflects a conflict-ridden conversation in which the participants beat around the bush rather than confronting the topic head-on.
It is with his economy of words, symbolism in each line, and close attention to detail that Hemingway proves his genius through Hills Like White Elephants.

  1. Cool result. Using words like "genius" definitely makes it sound like the register of a critic.

  2. Nice effort. I enjoyed the tag-line particularly, which was very Hemingway in its terseness and holding back info.
The review genre is difficult to employ in this task. On the one hand the mention of the story title and its author obviously guarantees that we think of the original text. On the other it is virtually impossible for the review to contain the elements of the original story (unless it gives a complete plot summary - which would make it a bad review!), so is this review text really 'based on' the story? I would say no, not exactly. It is 'about', but not 'based on'...

  3. Even though your review might not be based on the story, I still think you got a cool result out of the assignment and the review looks like a proper review and captures the basic themes of the short story.
