Hills Like White Elephants
They do
not agree upon what is going to happen
Although
he thinks that they do
She
realises that she is trapped in
A
relationship that has nowhere to go
She
clearly loves one more than the other
He is too
dumb to see
Or maybe
he just cannot bother
But she
knows who it is going to be
They
drink away their troubles
Although
her troubles stay
Her
suggestions however are subtle
So his
ideas will not go away
Their
ways will maybe part
Although
his solution may seem elegant
When he
realises what is really in her heart
There
might not be any white elephants
The poem is nicely executed (the two characters from the story have their differences outlined quite sharply in your version) and the presence of the title element from the original will ensure that a reader will make the connection back to Hemingway. However, you have not included the setting of the story (Spain, 1920s), so that means a distancing from the original that the same reader might wonder about what the reason would be for...
ReplyDeleteI think this is a cute little poem where you capture the emotions of both characters really good! I really like the last verse of the poem where you incorprated the white elephants!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem, I found it very light and clean. You manage to incorporate the two characters and their dwelling issues, which they find difficult to discuss with one another. :)
