Hills like white elephants - poetry

On a hot summer day,
close to each other we were absent;
Waiting to go away,
gazing at hills like white elephants.

The air among thick of strain,
the procedure must be done I think;
Natural and just plain,
And then we can have everything.

Later we shall be glad,
yet know the choice is thine;
Please stop speaking she asked,

Nothing is wrong with me I feel fine.

  1. This is a good effort to cram many of the original elements into a short poem. I do doubt whether a new reader would have a chance to deduce that this is meant to be 'based on' the Hemingway story. We'd need more specifics, for example references to the setting of Spain - and also character names and a more spelled out version of the conflict.
