130 Carrer de Castella
Barcelona, Spain

August 20, 1927

Dear Cousin,

Thank you for the letter, it was great to hear from you.
We are still enjoying our time here in Spain, father is working most days and mother keeps herself busy as well. I have made many new friends and are enjoying the lovely weather and the beautiful scenery.
I hear mother told you I have been unwell; I am much better now thank you. Please tell my aunt and uncle not to worry. Father’s dear friend Nick told us that he believed my illness was due to too much sun exposure and personally escorted me to a doctor in Madrid, who he said is the best in the country. Luckily it was easily treatable and I am completely recovered now.
If only that was all. There is so much I need to tell you, but it has to be in person. Please ask if you may come to visit me.
I wish you all well and hope to see you soon.

Much love, Mary.

  1. The letter is tantalizing in its offer of a hidden story (the abortion, obviously), but I don't think anyone reading it would be able to deduce that the new text has anything to do with Hemingway's original story... Thus, it is more a case of 'inspired by' than 'based on' Hemingway.

  2. Although your letter may be more inspired by the Hemingway story, I still think you made a cool creative interpretation of the original story which brings more intrigues and makes one want to hear the background and the future for "Mary".

    1. Oh and I believe that somewhere in the text the girl is mentioned to be named Jig :)
